32nd Annual Faber Birren Color Awards Show

The Stamford Art Association presents: “32nd Annual Faber Birren National Color Award Show” An open juried art exhibit for distinguished and creative expression of color at the Stamford Art Association September 30th through November 1st 2012 Opening Reception: Sunday September 30th 2012 from 4-6 PM Stamford, CT - In 1980, Faber Birren, world renowned color consultant, author of 27 books on color, endowed the Faber Birren Color Award of $1000 for original and creativeexpression of color. The Faber Birren Color Award Show has grown from a regional exhibit to one of national scope, encouraging artists in all media. This competition isthe only artistic event devoted exclusively to the use of color. This year the Stamford Art Association celebrates its 32nd year of the Faber Birren National Color Award Show. This year’s juror is Ian Alteveer, Assistant Curator Department of Modern & Contemporary Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY. Established in 1971, the Stamford Art Association is a nonprofit organization whose members include painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers. Our mission as a neighborhood arts organization is to provide a forum where emerging and professional artists can exhibit their work to the community and compete in juried shows.

The Association's townhouse gallery holds eight consecutive shows each year, six of which are juried exhibits, with prominent jurors from art schools and galleries and institutions in New York and surrounding areas, including the Whitney Museum, Bruce Museum, and Museum of Modern Art. Seven of the exhibits include cash prizes. Unlike other galleries, all artists, not just members, are welcome to submit their work for exhibit. Annual competitions draw submissions from local, regional, and national artists.

Among the competitions is the annual Faber Birren Color Show, endowed by the friends and family of world-renowned color consultant Faber Birren, a Stamford resident for 50 years. The show, which has grown from a regional exhibit to one that is now national in scope, awards $3,000 in prize money each year.

Our annual Marine Show is a tribute to Vivian and Stanley Reed, two of the founders of the Stamford Art Association and avid sailors.  It was originally funded by former Stamford Mayor Julius Wilensky.

Each year, we also showcase the work of students from Fairfield County high schools in a professionally juried exhibit that awards scholarships and other prizes to promising young artists. The show gives these students an opportunity to have their work displayed for the very first time in a public gallery.

In addition to the exhibits at the Townhouse Gallery, SAA also is partnering with the Ferguson Library to host the ongoing series of "Art at the Ferguson" exhibits in the Ferguson Library Auditorium Gallery.

We thank the following organizations for their generous and continued support:  the Kuriansky Foundation, the Wendell and Margaret Smith Foundation and ongoing support from many generous individuals.
