2011 GOPIO-CT Film Festival

GOPIO-CT, The Connecticut Chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin will open its 2011  Film Festival at the in Stamford, Connecticut  on September 15 at 7.30 p.m. with a screening of the internationally acclaimed film “West is West."

The director Leslie Udwin will be present for post screening discussion and Q& A. This sequel to the well received film “East is East” has already won many awards and is scheduled to release in North America in the next few months.

The festival continues at the on Friday September 16, at 8 p.m. with the screening of  "Nauka Dubi." The story by the renowned Rabindra Nath Tagore is about a husband who goes home with the wrong bride when a storm causes the boats carrying two separate wedding parties, to capsize.

On September 17,  “I am Kalam” about a very young boy who wants an education, but has no choice but to earn a living to help his family. An unlikely friendship develops  between the boy and a young prince who lives in the palace close to the boys place of work. This 7.30 p.m. screening is followed by a 9.30 p.m. screening of the light and entertaining “O Maria” , the story about a family estate held for generations now being sought after by big business for commercial use. 

An animated version of the Indian epic  “Ramayana, the story of Rama”. will show at the at 2 p.m. on September 18.  The film is based on the ‘good triumphs over evil’ story of the upcoming major Indian festival of Divali in October.  The festival closes at the theater in the Westport Town hall with an 7.30pm screening of “Teen Behenein," a powerful story about three teenage sisters who want to commit suicide because their parents cannot afford a dowry to get them married. The innocence of the children and their personalities far outweighs the subject matter of the film.

This is a festival not to be missed. It makes for a very entertaining weekend.
