Stamfordite Featured in 'Taste of Home'

Stamford resident Kristin Bataille's Mixed Greens with Orange Juice Vinaigrette was chosen from tens of thousands of recipes to be featured in this month's magazine.

Kristin Bataille’s Mixed Greens with Orange Juice Vinaigrette may be finding its way onto dining room tables around the U.S. Bataille’s recipe for mixed greens with a tangy orange juice vinaigrette is featured in this month’s issue of “Taste of Home” magazine.

“Taste of Home” receives tens of thousands of recipes every year. Recipes are submitted online and go into a database where editors can find them to fit a feature.

“We get a line-up for an issue and we start looking for recipes in our database,” Karen Berner, Food Editor at “Taste of Home” said.

The magazine spread featuring Bataille's salad is a four-course dinner built around the concept of an inexpensive Sunday chicken dinner.

“Who doesn’t like a roast chicken,” Berner said. “[Bataille’s] recipe was easy to prepare, a great accent to any meal, and would work for the holidays too.”

After a recipe is selected from the database, it enters the testing process. It is prepared in the test kitchen and, in the next round, shown to a panel including a representative from the creative team to begin thinking about how a menu will photograph for the magazine.

“I know our reader, so I have a good feeling about what will appeal to them” Berner said. “They tell us what they want to make for dinners and for potlucks.”

65-70 recipes appear in each issue of the magazine and many more are featured online.

“The thing I love about “Taste of Home” is that the recipes are so approachable,” Berner said. “Recipes have to be friendly and affordable, with mass appeal for family and friends.”

Berner is seeing more and more families returning to cooking meals at home, baking not only in the winter, but year-round, and on the lookout for recipes, like Bataille's, that are both easy and inexpensive.
