Stamford Week in Review

A look at the top news from the last week.

In case you missed a day, here's a quick roundup of all the lead stories from Stamford this week. There's always a lot going on, so take this opportunity to catch up if you missed something!

In local politics, the race for Stamford's top seat is heating up. Republican candidate Mike Fedele spent some time talking to Stamford police chief Jon Fontneau and debuted the first television ad of the race this week. Rep. William Tong and Board of Finance member David Martin both had busy weeks as well. The pair is facing off in a Sept. 10 primary, with Martin getting the Stamford Democratic City Committee nod while Tong garnered the support of both Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and Deputy Speaker of the House Rep. Patricia Billie Miller. The DCC called for greater unity from state democrats after they announced their support for Martin and Malloy announced his endorsement of Tong, while Billie Miller announced her endorsement later that same morning.

In police news, a big story this week was a woman who had her car towed by police after allegedly being caught driving without a license. She then proceeded to offer the tow truck driver sexual favors in exchange for the release with her car and threatened to claim he raped her if he did not allow her to get her car from him, according to police, who also said the driver surreptitiously filmed the interaction, which cause the woman to attack him when she noticed. She then allegedly offered the arresting police officers the same special treatment to let her go. Also in Stamford, a Darien teen's Jeep was struck by a New Canaan-bound train, disrupting service for a time.

Finally, on the evening before the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech, Stamford representatives and union leaders marched in the city for greater rights for immigrants.
