Sewer Line Break Cause of Beach Closings

A broken sewer line caused raw sewage to dump into a storm sewer drain is what caused the closure last week of Cummings and West beaches.

According to Stamford's Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare Ted Jankowski, the broken sewer line was at Cove Road and Van Buskirk Avenue. The broken line drained into a storm sewer line which feeds into Cummings Pond and ultimately into Long Island Sound, where raw sewage was found at the two beaches on Tuesday, July 16.

The beaches were reopened two days later on July 18.
