Scalzi Park: A Gem of a Park In Downtown Stamford

The city of Stamford recently completed the final phase of a $5 million refurbishing and sprucing up the 43-acre park on Bridge Street in the heart of downtown.

The facilities draw residents from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds, said Davis, a lifelong city resident who’s a professional firefighter assigned to the Stamford Fire Department’s Shippan station. “Everyone in the community can come and out and enjoy one of the nicest parks around,” Davis said.

There are courts for volleyball, bocce, basketball, handball; playgrounds for youngsters including a splash pad; and for the more daring, a zip line and climbing tower, and the skateboard park that opened in 2007.

Tyler said the park renovations that include new walkways along the park roadway means people can safely get in their cardio and exercise programs and “the elderly and disabled with their wheelchairs can enjoy the park too.”

Both Davis and Tyler, who’s the CEO and founder of Slammer Tennis World and runs the city’s summer tennis camp at Scalzi, said what makes the park even more attractive is that it’s free. “We have 12 courts with lights. Unlike New York City where it’ll cost you almost $60 an hour to play, this is free,” Davis said. “You can play and enjoy yourself. It’s just nice to see the park evolve into this.”

The park, which also has several ball fields including Cubeta Stadium, is open daily from 5:30 a.m. to midnight.
