Salmonella Scare: Eukanuba and Iams Dry Pet Food Recalled

Proctor and Gamble's Eukanuba dry dog foods, Iams dry dog foods and Iams dry cat foods are included in the recall.

The Proctor and Gamble Company is recalling several types of pet food because of potential salmonella contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The Procter and Gamble Company has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, though no instances of salmonella have been reported, and, according to the FDA, the products were made during a 10 day window at a single manufacturing site.

The products included in the recall are Eukanuba dry dog foods, Iams dry dog foods and Iams dry cat foods. Customers can check the lot code and UPC code on the FDA website to see if they are recalled.

Proctor and Gamble is retrieving these products as a precautionary measure. Consumers who purchased any of the recalled products should stop using the pet food, discard it and contact the company's toll-free line (800) 208-0172 (Monday – Friday, 9:00AM to 6:00PM), or via website at www.iams.com or www.eukanuba.com.

Pets with Salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, according the FDA. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If a pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, the FDA suggests contacting a veterinarian.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.
