Rain or Shine, All are Welcome for a Game of Horseshoes at Stamford's 'Coopertown'

At the intersection of Richmond Hill Avenue and Greenwich Avenue in Stamford, you might see a diminutive guy standing out there in the field on the corner, chucking horseshoes.

You'll see him there when it's beautiful out and the sun is shining. You'll see him when there's six inches of snow on the ground. You'll see him there in spite of torrential downpour, like Thursday afternoon.

The first time I saw Ronald Cooper, he was standing out in the field tossing shoes at what the locals have named "Coopertown," wearing a parka to shield from the day's rains. He told me he lives on East Main and wanted to make his neighborhood a better place to live, so he dug the horseshoe pits himself. He keeps up with the section of land, cleaning it daily of litter and chasing away messy geese.

"I'm down here everyday," Cooper said. "I wanted to start something to give people something fun to do, keep them out of trouble. If you leave work and you're stressed out, don't go home and get into trouble with your wife. Come here, come play and relax with us."
