Growing Flowers With Friendship In Stamford

Cove Island Park is more colorful and will be all summer thanks to the efforts of an army of KT Murphy students, their e-pals from GE and the Stamford Cove Conservancy.

About 150 4th- and 5th-graders and their GE e-pals planted about 2,000 marigolds, salvias and zinnias in an extended garden near the park's pavilion under the broiling Friday sunshine.

The KT Murphy-GE partnership began nearly 20 years ago as a pen pal program back in the day when letter writing was derigeur, according to Danette Melchionne, a GE employee who coordinated the Friday planting. "It's now evolved into an e-pal program."

The program use to culminate with an end of the school year party. "But it changed to a community-service program like this because GE likes to give back to the community," Melchionne explained.

Fourth-grader Erick Dominguez said he enjoyed being a friend of the environment with his GE friend and planting the flowers.
