Raw Sewage Forces Closure of Cummings, West Beaches [UPDATE]

Update: 1:50 p.m., July 17:

According to an advisory posted on the City of Stamford’s website, the State of Connecticut Department Agriculture Aquaculture Division received a telephone call at 10 a.m. July 16 "indicating there was a strong odor of sewage in the water near Cummings Beach. Stamford WPCA (Water Pollution Control Authority) responded and found what appeared to be untreated sewage in Cummings Pond on Soundview Avenue."

According to the announcement, "The Stamford Health Department, Stamford Recreation Services were all immediately notified.  Further investigation is being conducted by the WPCA to determine the exact location of the untreated sewage discharge. However, because of the extent of the untreated sewage discharge into Cummings and West Beaches the beaches will be closed for swimming until further notice."

A message seeking more information was left with Thaddeus Jankowski, the city's director of public safety, health and welfare.

Stamford's Cummings Beach is closed again today to swimming.

Head lifeguard Jamal Wilson said the city Health Department ordered the closure Tuesday and again today. The department did not provide a reason, Wilson said.

There were a half-dozen sun worshippers on the beach at midday. Wilson said the low beach attendance is typical for mid-week.

"It is a shame. This is where I swam in the ocean for the first time," said Saskia Marcinova, of Slovakia who is visiting her father who lives in Stamford.

Wilson said that Cove Island Park is open for swimming.

Patch will have more details on the beach closure as they become available.
