Animal Tales: Fishing Lines and Seagulls

There's nothing like tossing in the line and letting it plink into the water in hopes that legal sized striper or a chubby bluefish will bite on the other end.

Unfortunately, when the fish aren't biting, the seagulls are. Those flying carnivores will eat anything  including your lure and fishing line.

Stamford's Animal Control Supervisor Laurie Hollywood says her staff is receiving more calls about seagulls entangled in fishing lines. She advises that if you need to cut that line, pull it in, then cut it and discard it properly.

Otherwise, plenty of bird lovers will be calling to report gulls with fishing lines and lures wrapped around their beaks, caught in their legs or worse. Unfortunately, by the time animal control officers respond, the birds have taken off and usually for a painful death.
