Stamford Resident Vies for Title of Connecticut Woman of the Year to Benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Today marks the midway-point of a unique fundraising journey for local resident Cheryl Henchar, who is raising money to help save lives and provide support for more than 1 million Americans who are living with or in remission from a blood cancer. As a candidate for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2014 Man & Woman of the Year campaign, Cheryl is competing against 10 other men and women across Connecticut to raise the most money for blood cancer research and patient support services.

Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic and passionate individuals participate in the Man & Woman of the Year campaign to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, whose mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. For the 12th year in a row, Connecticut State Treasurer Denise Nappier is serving as the Honorary Chair of the Connecticut Man & Woman of the Year campaign. Treasurer Nappier lost her sister to leukemia in 2002 and is committed to supporting the cause and helping local families who are impacted by blood cancer.

You can help! As part of her campaign, Cheryl is working with four Ten Thousand Villages stores in New Canaan, New Haven, South Windsor and West Hartford to coordinate a “give-back day” on Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 12PM – 4PM during which 10 percent of the stores’ sales will go toward Cheryl’s fundraising campaign.  “The purchase of a unique handcrafted gift from Ten Thousand Villages will not only support The Leukemia Lymphoma Society, but will improve the livelihoods of women artisans in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East,” said Shawn Webb, Ten Thousand Villages in New Canaan store manager.

Ten Thousand Villages offers artisan-crafted home decor, jewelry, personal accessories and gift items from around the world. Featuring products from more than 130 artisan groups in 38 countries, they are part of a network of more than 150 retail outlets throughout the United States selling Ten Thousand Villages products. “I’m very humbled to be a part of this campaign,” Cheryl said. “I’m participating in this fundraising opportunity to help improve the quality of life of individuals and families who are affected by blood cancer.”

The local man and woman who raise the most dollars for research during the campaign timeframe will be awarded the titles of Connecticut Man and Woman of the Year at a special Grand Finale celebration on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the Waterview in Monroe, Conn. The event will feature live and silent auctions, remarks from LLS supporters, survivors and their loved ones, entertainment and more. Candidates who raise the most money on a national level will be recognized as the National Man and Woman of the Year once all local LLS chapters have concluded their campaigns.

About the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the United States in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year, because everyone wins when cancer loses. The titles are awarded to the men and women in each community who raise the most funds during the 10-week campaign; the top local fundraisers in the country also win the national titles. You can aid in their efforts by donating to or joining their campaigns not someday, but today.
