Stamford Hospital’s Bennett Cancer Center has been named a recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) presented by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Stamford Hospital is the only hospital in the state and one of only four hospitals in New England to receive the honor this year.
“It is an honor to again receive
this very special recognition,” said Liz Manfredo, Cancer Service Line Director
at the Bennett Cancer Center. “This award reflects the remarkable commitment
and dedication our highly trained physicians and staff provide to our patients
"People often think that they have to go outside of their community to receive state-of-the-art cancer care, but the truth is we provide excellent care here in Stamford and this prestigious award acknowledges that.”
Established in 2004, the ACS’ CoC
Outstanding Achievement Award focuses on enhancing quality cancer care, with
the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about care choices among cancer
patients and their loved ones.
The award is designed to recognize those cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients; motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care; facilitate dialogue between award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities for the purpose of sharing best practices; and encourage honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs.
The OAA is granted to a facility
following an onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the
facility demonstrates a commendation level with seven standards that represent
the four areas of program management, clinical services, patient outcomes and
In addition, facilities must receive a compliance rating for each of the remaining 27 cancer program standards.
For patients and the community,
the quality standards established by the CoC ensure a comprehensive approach to
care and information about clinical trials and new treatment options.
Hospital’s Bennett Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary team of board-certified
physicians, radiation therapists, oncology nurses and nurse navigators offers
the highest clinical standard of care.
The team provides prevention and early
detection programs, cancer education and a cancer registry that offers lifelong
patient follow-up, ongoing monitoring and improvements in quality cancer care.
Patients and their family can benefit from personalized and family-centered support options including integrative medicine programs, individual and family counseling, health, prevention and survivership programs and palliative and hospice care.
