Person-to-Person Youth Group and Fredric & Company Hair Salon Raise $1,000 for New Moms

On a recent Sunday afternoon, when most Darien businesses are closed, the stylists at Fredric & Company Hair Salon were washing, drying, clipping, cutting, snipping, and styling, and generally having a booming day.

The occasion marked the “Hair Affair” fundraiser and awareness building event organized by Person-to-Person’s  Youth Group.  Fredric & Company co-owners, Connie Hatterman and Janet Mantanaro and 4 of the salon’s stylists (Naela Malick, Alaina Mariano, Lynne Tiano, and Maria Charris) donated all of their services and gratuities for the day, raising $1,000 to help fund P2P's infant car seat program, which supplies mothers in need with a new infant car seat at both Stamford and Norwalk hospitals.

"I was so thrilled with the positive energy at Fredric & Company from not only the hair stylists and youth group leaders but also from the community,” said Amy Fraser, the group’s Advisor. “Adults and kids left with great haircuts and big smiles while giving back to a wonderful cause.  It made me so proud to be a part of Person-to-Person."

Comprised of local high school students from the surrounding communities, the P2P Youth Group was established in 2001 to promote leadership, community awareness, and responsibility among the youth in our community.  The co-ed program welcomes students from any public or private school in grades 9 – 12 throughout the school year, and includes college age volunteers during the summer months.

In addition to special fund-raising events like “Hair Affair,” the Youth Group members have the opportunity to lead several of Person-to-Person’s client programs after school on Thursday afternoons, and on Saturdays, when they are in charge of distributing clothes and food to clients in need.  During the summer months, the students may volunteer Monday – Friday from 1 – 4 pm.

Youth group members also organize the food pantry and clothing center, help with donation deliveries, answer phones, confirm appointments and work on projects for the P2P Volunteer Director. This year they will also buy new toys for the P2P Christmas Toy Store which is held in mid-December for P2P clients.

The Person-to-Person Youth Group is always eager to welcome new volunteers throughout the year. The 2013-2014 season kicks off the week of September 9.  For more information, interested youth volunteers may contact: Janet King, Director of Volunteers at  203.621.0683 or jking@p2phelps.org.
