It’s that time again — time for high school seniors to tackle the maze of college application forms. The Tutoring Club can help. Maria Markus, owner of the Tutoring Club of Stamford since 2007, says, “Now that the SAT and ACT scores are coming in, there is so much for seniors to think about as they prepare their applications. It can seem like an overwhelming task, but it doesn’t have to be, with our help.” The Tutoring Club offers courses to guide students through the entire application process.
The Admissions Essay, required on all applications, seems to be the biggest hurdle for students. From brainstorming for an appropriate topic, to organizing, writing and editing the final copy, Tutoring Club’s complete essay service guides the student through each step. Markus notes, “Our English tutors are experienced in all aspects of this process, including the preparation of ‘mini-essays’ required on most college applications. Students won’t have to guess or worry about how to do it or what to say. We make sure it’s all in place.”
"There are also some confusing supplements to college applications — mainly the Student Activities Sheet," Markus notes. “Our tutors have the tools and experience to organize and format these all-important activities. The Activities Sheet is one of the first things Admissions Committees look at. We review every in-school and out-of-school activity and award, and create an ‘at-a-glance’ summary sheet of all the involvements that make a well-rounded student. We ensure that nothing is left out.”
"All of the hard work that students and parents have done during these high school years is condensed into these application forms,” Markus reminds. “It’s vitally important that all these efforts are reflected fully on the application. That’s not easy, especially for first-timers.”
The Tutoring Club’s College Applications Course can be divided into two phases: the College Essay-Writing Course, which is four hours (more if needed); and the College Applications Course, which is two hours. Additional hours are offered for in-depth work. The tutors work with small groups (no more than three students per tutor), and private tutoring is also available.
