Long Ridge of Stamford Workers to Strike Tuesday

Union employees reportedly voted by secret ballot on June 23 to authorize strikes lasting up to 10 days, unless company officials agree to go back to the bargaining table.

About 700 workers from five HealthBridge nursing homes in Connecticut, including Long Ridge of Stamford, will reportedly be going on strike Tuesday morning to protest what they say are "unilaterally imposed new wages, benefits and working conditions."

According to a report in the CT Post, HealthBridge recently settled a contract with the New England Health Care Employees Union, District 1199, calling for raises totaling 9 percent in the first year and 17 percent over six years for most union employees. However the contract also calls for reduced hours and increased contribution levels for health insurance which Union leaders say more than offset the increase in wages.

Union employees reportedly voted by secret ballot on June 23 to authorize strikes lasting up to 10 days, unless company officials agree to go back to the bargaining table. The workers primarily consist of nurses, nursing assistants, laundry, dietary, housekeeping and other support staff, according to the CT Post report.
