Video: Redd Named Stamford Officer of the Year

Officer Silas Redd, Sr. is being recognized for spreading his message about "choices and consequences" with at-risk youth.

You don’t have to read his bio to know that Officer Silas Redd, Sr. was a Marine. When you meet him, you know right away that he’s solid, in every sense of the word. On Friday night, Redd will be named the Stamford Police Association’s 2010 Officer of the Year.

Redd, 50, joined the in October 1988 after serving six years in the Marine Corps and two-and-a-half years at the United Nations. He has served in the Uniform Division, Street Narcotics unit and the Special Services unit. Five years ago, he was assigned to the newly-formed Youth Services division, where he continues to work with at-risk youth.

“As we go through life we’re going to have obstacles,” Redd said, as he shared the message he brings to Stamford’s troubled kids, “Don’t put obstacles in your own way. Don’t you stop you from getting where you want to be.”

Redd said the recipient of the Officer of the Year award is selected by past winners, a distinction that means a lot to him.

“There are upwards of 250 police officers in the department,” he said. “I know the quality of the men and women that are here in the Stamford Police Department... so for me to be chosen, words alone can’t describe it.”
