13 FCIAC Teams Qualify for Girls Basketball State Tourney
The tournament begins on Monday with Class LL and Class M first-round games; Class L gets under way on Tuesday
Thirteen of the FCIAC's 19 girls basketball teams have qualified for the state tournament that begins on Monday in Class LL and Class M and Tuesday in Class L.
Ten teams qualified in Class LL, headed by top seed and undefeated Danbury (20-0), which faces Trumbull in the FCIAC championship game on Thursday at Fairfield Ludlowe.
St. Joseph (17-3) earned a No. 7 seed, but will be without leading scorer Nancy Stablein, who suffered a torn ACL in the Cadets' 44-25 loss to Stamford in the FCIAC quarterfinals. Trumbull (17-3) is the No. 8 seed and could face Danbury in a rematch in the quarterfinals.
A year ago, the Eagles entered the Class LL tournament as the top seed but were upset by eventual state champion Career Magnet in the round of eight.

Also qualifying in Class LL were: No. 12 Norwalk (15-5), No. 19 Fairfield Warde (12-8), No. 20 Staples (12-8), No. 23 Stamford (11-9), No. 26 Westhill (10-10), No. 27 New Canaan (10-10) and No. 31 Fairfield Ludlowe (8-12).
No. 10 Wilton (13-6), which reached the FCIAC playoffs for the first time since 2003, and No. 15 Darien (12-8) qualified in Class L and Trinity Catholic (13-7) is the 14th seed in Class M.
Non-qualifiers include Ridgefield (7-13), Harding (15-5), Greenwich (4-16), McMahon (3-17) and Bridgeport Central (2-18) in Class LL and Bassick in Class M (0-20).
As one of the top 16 seeds, Danbury, St. Joseph, Trumbull and Norwalk earned first-round home games.
Match-ups
Danbury takes on No. 32 New Milford (8-12), St. Joseph hosts Westhill in an all-FCIAC battle, Trumbull faces No. 25 Bristol Eastern (11-9) and No. 12 Norwalk entertains No. 21 Windsor Locks (12-8).
Second-round games in Class LL will be played on Wednesday with the quarterfinals set for March 5. There are no byes in Class LL as an even 32 teams qualified.
The other FCIAC teams in Class LL will be on the road for their tournament openers. Warde visits No. 14 Glastonbury (14-6), Staples heads to No. 13 Hall (14-6), Stamford takes on No. 10 Mercy of Middletown (11-9), New Canaan is at No. 6 Manchester (17-3) and Ludlowe travels to No. 2 Lauralton Hall of Milford (19-1).
If St. Joseph and Stamford advance, they would meet in a second-round match at St. Joseph. Games through the quarterfinal round will be played at the site of the higher seed. There are no other potential all-FCIAC matchups in the second round.
Class L and Class M
In Class L, Wilton and Darien earned home games as the Warriors host No. 23 Foran (9-11) and Darien welcomes No. 18 Farmington (11-9).
The Class L second-round contests will be played on Thursday with the quarterfinal games set for March 8.
Only 25 teams qualified in Class M, meaning the top seven teams earned byes: E.O. Smith (20-0), Pomperaug (18-2), Bacon Academy (18-2), Berlin (17-3), Torrington (17-3), Watertown (16-4) and RHAM (15-5).
In Class M, Trinity Catholic will be be home for its tournament opener, hosting No. 19 Kolbe-Cathedral (12-8). The Class M second-round games will be played on Wednesday with the quarterfinals set for March 5.
Thirty-three teams qualified in Class M, meaning No. 33 seed Lewis Mills (8-12) and No. 32 Rocky Hill (8-12) will square off in a playin game on Friday.
Last year, Trumbull was the only FCIAC team to reach the quarterfinals.
Hillhouse is the defending state champion in Class L while Windham took the Class M crown, although the Whippets didn't qualify for the state tournament this year, finishing 5-15.
Hillhouse (18-2) moved up and is the No. 5 seed in Class LL. Career Magnet (18-1) is seeded fourth and would face the Hall-Staples winner in the second round if it gets past its opening game against Southington (9-11).
Portland won the Class S title last season and is seeded sixth this year.
The state championship games once again will be played at the Mohegan Sun Arena the weekend of March 16-17.
