...The Stamford senior American Legion team, which is on the bubble to make the state tournament, swept Bridgeport in a critical doubleheader on Monday.

Stamford, which improved to 12-10 with the sweep, now needs to win only two of its final five games to garner a postseason berth.

In Zone Four, teams with winning records qualify for postseason play, Since zone four clubs play a 27-game schedule, 14 wins is the magic number.

Stamford won the opener of the doubleheader 5-4, then took the nightcap,10-4.

The Stamford 14s and 15s begin play in the Babe Ruth state tournament this weekend after winning District One titles over the weekend against Greenwich.

The 14-year-old tournament is set for Waterford while the 15-year-old tournament takes place in New Milford.

The semifinals are set in the 11-year-old District One baseball tournament. On Thursday, Darien National meets Ridgefield National (5:30 p.m.) and Wilton takes on North Stamford (7:30 p.m.) at Springdale.

The Newfield Swim and Tennis Club took on Middlesex Club of Darien in its opening water polo match of the season on Thursday.  

The senior team (ages 14-17) lost, 12-8.  Sam Sterman played great defense, blocking 12 goals from Middlesex. Joe Haddad scored three goals while Samantha Felder and Sam Berizzi each scored twice and Sydney Baker added one goal.

Newfield’s offense was strong with more than 30 shots on goal, including 10 by Haddad, five by Berizzi and four by Felder.

Haddad, Baker, Kendra Fitzpatrick and Kyra Fitzpatrick each had two shots, and William Smelzer, Jessica Wall and Will Cook one each.

The juniors (ages 11 – 13) suffered a 15-7 loss, with Tyler Zielinski (five saves) and Liam Gorey (12 saves) playing well in goal.

Collon Donovan scored three goals for Newfield, Nick Handali two and Tyler Zielinski and Aditya Krishnamachar one apiece. Krishnamachar and Zielinski each had three shots on goal.

Newfield’s Midgets (10 & under) were beaten, 10-2. Nick Giotos and Kara Trac scored the goals for Newfield.
