Metro-North Crime Rate Up 6 Percent
While the number of robberies, felony assaults and burglaries declined, the number of grand larcenies increased from 65 to 79, resulting in a slight increase in overall crime, according to a report.
Felony crimes on Metro-North Railroad increased 6 percent January through August of this year compared to the same period in 2010, accord to a report in the CT Post.
The same period-over-period comparison includes a 22 percent increase in grand larcenies, according to the report, citing Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police.
While the number of robberies, felony assaults and burglaries declined, the number of grand larcenies increased from 65 to 79, resulting in a slight increase in overall crime.
MTA Police attributed the increase in larcenies in part to the theft of electronics such as iPhones, iPads and laptops, either on board trains or at stations, according to the report.
Last month Metro-North annnounced it would be increasing fares on the New Haven Line by 15 percent, spread over a period of seven years, causing outrage from commuters who say service quality has eroded over the years.
