A Very "Jerry" Engagement

You never know what will happen on set of “The Jerry Springer Show” and for one couple, being part of the show’s audience proved life-changing in itself.

Dwayne Champion of New York and Karen Harris of Stamford met over five years ago and became friends while they were both still in other relationships. They kept in touch over the years and, when they were both once again single, they caught up on their careers and their lives. They began dating a couple years ago.

While living and working in her hometown of Stamford, Harris would get tickets whenever she could to go see a filming of “The Jerry Springer Show.” While she’s surely had some memorable moments in the audience, none will compare to one visit with Champion.

“I knew I wanted to propose, I just had no idea how I wanted to do it,” Champion told Patch.

One of Champion’s friends works security on "The Jerry Springer Show," as they were talking before a taping, Champion let his friend know that he planned to ask Harris to marry him in the next few days.

“I got up to get a drink and the audience director pulled me aside and said “I hear you want to ask your girlfriend to marry you here!” — I was just like “Say what?”” Champion laughed. “Sometimes you just do something out of the box and once it was out there, I thought “You know what, I can do this.””

During the audience question and answers, the audience director handed the microphone to Champion.

““How you doing Jerry, I just got a comment. I just want to turn and ask my fiancee’ will she marry me…?” Champion said.

He then knelt to put the ring on her finger as Springer handed a shocked Harris the microphone for her answer — a resounding “Yes!”

Friends and family didn’t even believe the couple when they announced they had gotten engaged on “The Jerry Springer Show” — luckily, they had the proof.

“They didn’t believe us until they saw the pictures of us with Jerry!” Harris laughed. “”It’s a once in a lifetime thing. I feel so blessed to have found Dwayne and to have had such a unique proposal.”

The show will air tomorrow and the couple will watch it together while visiting Harris’ family, proving once and for all that their engagement was preserved for all time on national television.

“You always see the crazy things on “Jerry,” but you don’t see the really positive things like this,” Champion said.

Champion and Harris married on May 27 in Virginia. The episode of “The Jerry Springer Show” that includes their proposal will air this Tuesday at 11 am on WPIX–TV Channel 11.
